F. Supp. stands for Federal Supplement, a legal citation abbreviation.
West reporter for selected decisions of the US district courts, created in 1932 so that trial-court opinions would no longer be mixed with appellate cases in the Federal Reporter. Its first series ran from 1932 to 1998 in 999 volumes.
Example: The district court's ProCD ruling, 908 F. Supp. 640 (W.D. Wis. 1996), was reversed by the Seventh Circuit.
Usage notes
Only opinions that judges or editors select are printed, so many district court rulings exist only on Westlaw, Lexis or PACER. District court opinions bind no other court, though they can be persuasive. Write it with a space, "F. Supp.", because "Supp." is a multi-letter abbreviation. The second series began in 1998 and the third in 2014.
