F. App'x stands for Federal Appendix, a legal citation abbreviation.
Printed collection of "unpublished" or nonprecedential opinions of the federal courts of appeals, issued by West from 2001 until it ceased publication in 2021. Although printed, these decisions generally lack binding force in their own circuits.
Example: The panel's nonprecedential ruling, reported in F. App'x, may be cited but does not bind later panels.
Usage notes
The Bluebook spells it with an apostrophe: "F. App'x". Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 32.1 lets lawyers cite unpublished opinions issued on or after January 1, 2007, though circuits differ on how much weight they get. Since the series ended, nonprecedential opinions are cited to Westlaw or Lexis instead.
