Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations

Specialized West reporter, begun in 1940, that publishes federal district court opinions interpreting the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Criminal Procedure, along with conference proceedings and articles on federal practice. Discovery, class certification and sanctions rulings often appear in it.

Example: Zubulake v. UBS Warburg LLC, 217 F.R.D. 309 (S.D.N.Y. 2003), set the framework for shifting e-discovery costs.

Opinions printed in F.R.D. are not repeated in F. Supp., so some important procedural rulings appear only here. It is written closed up because each element is a single capital letter. The reporter is a common starting point for research on discovery disputes and Rule 23 class actions.
