F.4th stands for Federal Reporter, Fourth Series, a legal citation abbreviation.
Current series of West's Federal Reporter, which began in 2021 after F.3d reached volume 999. It publishes precedential opinions of all the federal courts of appeals, including the Federal Circuit, and is where most recent appellate case law is cited.
Example: Opposing counsel's brief cites nothing newer than F.3d, ignoring two F.4th decisions on point.
Usage notes
The Bluebook form uses "4th" with no space, following the pattern of earlier series. An F.4th citation tells a reader at a glance that a decision dates from 2021 or later. Newly released opinions receive their volume and page within weeks, but pinpoint pages are final only once the bound volume is printed.
