CategoriesWriting & Everyday

Encl. stands for Enclosure, an email and office abbreviation.

Placed below the signature block of a business letter to show that documents are included in the envelope, such as a résumé, invoice or contract. Writers often add the number or names of the items.

Example: Sincerely, Daniel Ortiz, Office Manager. Encl.: signed lease (2 copies) and a check for the deposit.

Usage notes

Variants include Enc., Encs. for several items, and the full word "Enclosure." It goes a line or two below the typed name, before any cc line. In email the equivalent is a note about attachments, though formal letters sent as PDF attachments may still carry "Encl." British style often drops the period.
