Elo stands for Elo rating system, a gaming slang abbreviation.
Skill-rating method that adjusts players' scores after each game depending on the result and the opponent's rating. Created for chess and adapted for many online games, where "Elo" is used loosely for rank.
Example: I dropped 50 Elo after a losing streak, time to take a break.
Usage notes
Named after Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor; the US Chess Federation adopted his system in 1960 and FIDE in 1970. Because it is a surname, not an acronym, "ELO" in capitals is a common error (and the name of the band Electric Light Orchestra). "Elo hell" is gamer slang for feeling trapped at a low rank.
