EFP stands for Explosively formed penetrator, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Type of shaped-charge bomb in which the blast forms a concave metal plate, usually copper, into a high-speed slug that can pierce armored vehicles. EFPs were used against US troops in Iraq.
Example: An EFP pierced the side of the MRAP and wounded three soldiers.
Usage notes
US officials said Iran supplied many of the EFPs used by Iraqi militias, which were among the deadliest IEDs of the war. Also called an explosively formed projectile. The principle is also used in some anti-armor munitions.
