DPDT stands for Double-pole, double-throw, an electronics & electrical abbreviation.
Switch or relay with two independent poles, each able to connect to either of two terminals, all operated together. DPDT switches are used to reverse the direction of DC motors, swap pairs of signals or switch both wires of a circuit at once.
Example: A DPDT switch wired in an X pattern reverses the polarity to run the motor backward.
Usage notes
DPDT is equivalent to two SPDT switches sharing one actuator. Guitar effects pedals use footswitches with three poles (3PDT) for true-bypass switching and an LED indicator. Relays may also be described in "form" codes, such as 2 form C for DPDT.
