DELE stands for Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language), a standardized test abbreviation.

Official Spanish proficiency diplomas issued by Spain's Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education, with exams at all six CEFR levels from A1 to C2. The diplomas never expire and are recognized by universities and employers worldwide.

Example: Spanish nationality applicants from non-Spanish-speaking countries must hold at least a DELE A2.

Usage notes

The University of Salamanca prepares the exams. A shorter online alternative, SIELE, reports scores valid for five years. Citizenship applicants also pass the CCSE test on Spanish constitution and culture.
