CSET stands for California Subject Examinations for Teachers, a standardized test abbreviation.

Series of exams in which prospective California teachers show knowledge of the subjects they will teach, such as CSET: Multiple Subjects for elementary teachers or CSET: Mathematics for secondary. Pearson administers them for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Example: She passed all three subtests of the CSET: Multiple Subjects before starting her credential program.

Usage notes

Each subtest is scored from 100 to 300, with 220 needed to pass. Since 2021 candidates can also meet the subject-matter requirement through approved coursework or a qualifying degree major. Elementary candidates historically also took the RICA reading test, which is being replaced by a literacy performance assessment.
