CYL stands for Cylinder, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Column on an eyeglass prescription giving the extra lens power, in diopters, needed to correct astigmatism. It is always paired with an axis, written in degrees from 1 to 180, that shows the orientation of the correction.
Example: Rx OS: -1.25 SPH, -1.50 CYL, axis 175; new astigmatism correction may need adaptation.
Usage notes
Optometrists usually write cylinder in minus form, while some ophthalmologists use plus form; the two describe the same lens and can be converted. A blank cylinder column means no astigmatism correction. Toric contact lenses and intraocular lenses correct astigmatism.
