CSOM stands for Chronic suppurative otitis media, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Long-standing infection of the middle ear with persistent drainage through a perforated eardrum, typically lasting more than two to six weeks. It is a major cause of preventable hearing loss in low- and middle-income countries.
Example: CSOM left ear, central perforation with mucopurulent discharge; ciprofloxacin drops and dry ear precautions.
Usage notes
Topical antibiotic drops such as ciprofloxacin are more effective than oral antibiotics. Surgery to repair the eardrum (tympanoplasty) or remove infected bone (mastoidectomy) may be needed. A cholesteatoma, an abnormal skin growth in the middle ear, can cause chronic drainage and erode nearby structures. Water should be kept out of the ear.
