CaCO3 stands for Calcium carbonate, a drug abbreviation.
Calcium salt used as an antacid (Tums), a calcium supplement and a phosphate binder in kidney disease. It contains 40 percent elemental calcium, the highest of the common calcium salts.
Example: CaCO3 1,250 mg (500 mg elemental) BID with meals; separate from levothyroxine.
Usage notes
Calcium carbonate needs stomach acid to dissolve, so it is taken with food, whereas calcium citrate (21 percent elemental calcium) absorbs well without food and in people on acid-reducing drugs. Large doses with absorbable alkali can cause milk-alkali syndrome. It binds levothyroxine, fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines.
