Brig stands for Brigadier, a british military rank abbreviation.
British Army and Royal Marines rank above colonel and below major general, NATO grade OF-6, usually held by brigade commanders and senior staff officers. The insignia is a crown above three stars arranged in a triangle.
Example: Brig Carter, commander of 16 Air Assault Brigade, visited the troops on exercise.
Usage notes
The British rank replaced the old brigadier-general in the 1920s and is not counted as a general officer, unlike the US one-star brigadier general. In naval contexts, "brig" is also the word for a ship's prison and a two-masted sailing vessel.
