CAPT stands for Captain (US Navy and Coast Guard), a US Navy and coast guard rank abbreviation.
Senior officer rank at pay grade O-6 in the Navy and Coast Guard, insignia a silver eagle or four gold sleeve stripes. Captains command aircraft carriers, large amphibious ships, air wings, submarine squadrons and major bases, and equal colonels in the other services.
Example: CAPT Holloway, commanding officer of the carrier, addressed the crew over the 1MC.
Usage notes
Navy style writes CAPT in capitals, distinguishing it from Capt, the Air Force, Marine Corps and Space Force captain at the much lower grade of O-3. AP style writes Capt. for both, so news readers must rely on context. The title "captain" is also given to the commanding officer of any vessel, whatever the officer's rank.
