BASE stands for Basically available, soft state, eventual consistency, a data & database abbreviation.
A description of the guarantees many distributed NoSQL databases offer instead of ACID: the system stays available, data may change over time as replicas sync, and copies converge to the same value eventually rather than immediately.
Example: The cart service is BASE, so a just-added item may briefly not show up on another device.
Usage notes
A deliberate chemistry pun on ACID, used by Eric Brewer's research group in the late 1990s and popularized by Dan Pritchett of eBay in a 2008 article. It reflects the trade-offs described by the CAP theorem. Many modern databases offer tunable consistency, letting each query choose strong or eventual guarantees.
