BART stands for Bay Area Rapid Transit, a rail and transit abbreviation.
Rapid transit system serving San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and other Bay Area cities, with trains running under the bay through the Transbay Tube. It also serves San Francisco and Oakland airports.
Example: Take BART from SFO to Powell Street; it's about 30 minutes and avoids freeway traffic.
Usage notes
Service began in 1972, and the Transbay Tube opened in 1974. BART uses an unusual broad track gauge of 5 feet 6 inches, which makes its trains incompatible with other railroads. Its trains' high-pitched wheel screech is a well-known complaint, and new trains entered service from 2018.
