CategoriesBusiness & Finance

BAF stands for Bunker adjustment factor, a logistics, supply chain & trade abbreviation.

Surcharge on ocean freight that adjusts for changes in the price of bunker (ship) fuel, usually recalculated monthly or quarterly by each carrier.

Example: The BAF went up this quarter after fuel prices rose.

Usage notes

BAFs climbed after IMO 2020, the global regulation cutting the maximum sulfur content of ship fuel from 3.5% to 0.5%, which required costlier fuel. Air freight's equivalent is the fuel surcharge.
