arcsin stands for Arcsine (inverse sine), a math abbreviation.
The inverse of the sine function, returning the angle whose sine is a given number. Its outputs are restricted to −90° to 90° (−π/2 to π/2) so that each input has exactly one answer.
Example: arcsin(0.5) = 30°, because sin 30° = 0.5.
Usage notes
Calculators label it sin⁻¹, which does not mean 1/sin; programming languages call it asin. Its input must lie between −1 and 1, or the result is undefined in real numbers. The "arc" prefix reflects that on the unit circle the answer is an arc length.
