AMPS stands for Advanced Mobile Phone System, a telecom abbreviation.
Analog first-generation cellular standard developed by Bell Labs and launched in Chicago in October 1983, the basis of early mobile phone service in North America and several other countries.
Example: The DynaTAC brick phone ran on the AMPS network and cost almost 4,000 dollars.
Usage notes
AMPS divided coverage into hexagonal cells that reused frequencies, the principle behind all cellular networks. Its analog signals could be intercepted with scanners and phones could be cloned, leading to widespread fraud. A digital upgrade, D-AMPS (IS-136), followed. US regulators allowed carriers to switch off AMPS in 2008.
