ADSL stands for Asymmetric digital subscriber line, a telecom abbreviation.
Most common form of DSL broadband, providing faster download than upload speeds over copper phone lines, up to about 8 Mbit/s for original ADSL and 24 Mbit/s for ADSL2+.
Example: The village only gets ADSL, so 6 Mbit/s is about the best anyone can manage.
Usage notes
ADSL was developed at Bellcore in the late 1980s and spread in the late 1990s and 2000s. The asymmetry suits typical web use, where users download far more than they upload. Performance depends heavily on line length and quality, with speeds dropping beyond a few kilometers. Many providers have retired ADSL as fiber reaches more homes.
