ALPR stands for Automated license plate reader, a police abbreviation.
Camera system that photographs passing vehicles, reads their license plates and checks them against hot lists of stolen cars or wanted persons, storing the time and location of each read. ALPRs are mounted on patrol cars, poles and bridges.
Example: An ALPR camera flagged the stolen car on the highway, and officers stopped it a mile later.
Usage notes
Also called LPR. Networks such as Flock Safety have spread quickly to cities, neighborhoods and retailers. Privacy advocates object to retaining location data on millions of innocent drivers, and some states limit how long data can be kept. Britain's equivalent is ANPR.
