2ndLt stands for Second Lieutenant (US Marine Corps), a US Marine Corps rank abbreviation.
Entry officer rank in the Marine Corps, pay grade O-1, marked by a gold bar. Every new Marine officer, whatever the future specialty, completes the six-month Basic School at Quantico, Virginia, which trains each lieutenant as a provisional rifle platoon commander.
Example: 2ndLt Palmer graduated from The Basic School and was assigned to the infantry officer course.
Usage notes
Marine officers are commissioned through the Naval Academy, Naval ROTC and Officer Candidates School at Quantico. The Marine Corps writes 2ndLt with no space, compared with Army 2LT and Air Force 2d Lt. Marines use the term "platoon commander" rather than the Army's "platoon leader."
