LCpl stands for Lance Corporal (US Marine Corps), a US Marine Corps rank abbreviation.
Pay grade E-3 in the Marine Corps, shown by one chevron above crossed rifles. Lance corporals are among the most numerous Marines and do much of the Corps' daily work as riflemen, mechanics, clerks and operators.
Example: LCpl Owens stood fire watch while the rest of the squad slept in the barracks.
Usage notes
"Lance" comes from the Italian "lancia spezzata," broken lance, a veteran soldier in early modern armies. Marines joke about the "lance corporal underground," the informal network through which rumors travel faster than official word. The British Army uses lance corporal as its junior NCO appointment, while in the Marine Corps an LCpl is not yet an NCO.
