ZFS stands for Zettabyte File System, a computer abbreviation.
Combined file system and volume manager that checksums all data to detect and repair silent corruption, with copy-on-write snapshots, compression and its own software RAID (RAID-Z). It is popular in NAS systems, servers and home labs.
Example: The TrueNAS box runs ZFS, so a monthly scrub catches any bit rot before it spreads.
Usage notes
Jeff Bonwick and Matthew Ahrens led its development at Sun Microsystems, which released it in 2005; the expansion "zettabyte" was later dropped, and ZFS is now simply a name. The OpenZFS project maintains it for Linux and FreeBSD. Its CDDL license is considered incompatible with the Linux kernel's GPL, so it is distributed as a separate module, although Ubuntu ships it.
