BYOD stands for Bring your own device, a computer abbreviation.
Workplace policy that lets employees use personal phones, tablets or laptops for work email, apps and data. It cuts hardware costs but raises security, privacy and support questions for both sides.
Example: Under our BYOD policy, you must install the company's management profile before accessing email.
Usage notes
The term spread around 2009 to 2011 as smartphones entered offices. Organizations usually control BYOD with mobile device management or app-level protection that separates work data from personal data, so a departing employee's work apps can be wiped without touching family photos. Variants include CYOD (choose your own device) and COPE (corporate-owned, personally enabled).
