WMI stands for Working Memory Index, a psychology abbreviation.

Wechsler index score measuring the ability to hold and manipulate information in mind for short periods, using subtests such as Digit Span, Arithmetic and Picture Span. Low WMI scores are common in people with attention difficulties.

Example: Her WMI was the lowest of her index scores, consistent with trouble following multi-step instructions.

Usage notes

Earlier Wechsler editions called this the Freedom from Distractibility index. Working memory capacity relates strongly to reading comprehension and mathematics. Results can be lowered temporarily by anxiety, fatigue or poor test conditions.
