BDI stands for Beck Depression Inventory, a psychology abbreviation also used in medicine.
Widely used 21-item self-report questionnaire that measures the severity of depressive symptoms, such as sadness, loss of pleasure, guilt, sleep changes and fatigue, over the past two weeks. Total scores range from 0 to 63, with higher scores indicating more severe symptoms.
Example: Her BDI score fell from 31 to 12 over the course of treatment.
Usage notes
Psychiatrist Aaron Beck introduced the inventory in 1961, and the revised BDI-II (1996) aligned it with updated diagnostic criteria. It is a measure of symptom severity, not a diagnosis by itself. Beck also created the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Hopelessness Scale.
