Individually administered intelligence test for children aged about 6 to 16, widely used in schools and clinics to identify learning disabilities and giftedness and to plan educational support. The WISC-V, published in 2014, yields a full-scale IQ and five primary index scores.
Example: The school psychologist used the WISC to evaluate whether the student qualified for the gifted program.
First published in 1949, the WISC is the children's counterpart to the adult WAIS. The fifth edition's indexes cover verbal comprehension, visual-spatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed. Pronounced "wisk."
