WinRE stands for Windows Recovery Environment, a computer abbreviation.
Minimal recovery system on a hidden partition that Windows starts after repeated failed boots, offering Startup Repair, System Restore, Safe Mode, uninstalling updates and a command prompt.

Usage notes
WinRE is a customized image of Windows PE, a lightweight version of Windows. Security update KB5034441 in 2024 failed on many PCs because their recovery partition was too small for the patched image. In 2025 Microsoft introduced "quick machine recovery", which can fetch fixes through WinRE when a faulty update stops many PCs from booting.
