WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, an Internet & web abbreviation.

The W3C's international guidelines for making websites and apps usable by people with disabilities, covering text alternatives, keyboard access, color contrast, captions and more. Success criteria are graded at levels A, AA and AAA.

Example: The contract requires the new portal to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA before launch.

Usage notes

WCAG 1.0 appeared in 1999, 2.0 in 2008, 2.1 in 2018 and 2.2 in October 2023. Level AA is the usual legal and contractual target and is referenced by regulations in the US, the EU and elsewhere. The guidelines rest on four principles summed up as POUR: perceivable, operable, understandable and robust. Pronounced "wuh-kag" or spelled out.
