WASSCE stands for West African Senior School Certificate Examination, a standardized test abbreviation.
Final secondary school exam conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia. Grades from A1 to F9 in core and elective subjects determine eligibility for university admission.
Example: Applicants need five WASSCE credits, including English and mathematics, at grade C6 or better.
Usage notes
In Nigeria candidates also take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) run by JAMB, and some sit NECO exams as an alternative to WAEC. Nigerians often say "WAEC" for both the exam and the council, while Ghanaians usually say WASSCE.
