A level stands for Advanced Level, a standardized test abbreviation.

Two-year subject qualification taken at about ages 16 to 18 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and in many international schools, serving as the main basis for university admission. Students usually take three subjects, graded A* to E, and university offers are expressed in grades such as AAB.

Example: Her conditional offer from Bristol was AAA at A level, including mathematics.

Usage notes

Also written A-level. Introduced in 1951 alongside O levels, it gained the A* grade in 2010. Since reforms in England beginning in 2015, A levels are assessed mainly by final exams, and the AS level no longer counts toward them. Scotland uses Highers and Advanced Highers instead.
