VFSS stands for Videofluoroscopic swallow study, a rehabilitation abbreviation.
Instrumental swallowing evaluation using real-time X-ray video while the patient swallows barium-mixed foods and liquids. It shows the mouth, throat and upper esophagus throughout the swallow.
Example: VFSS scheduled to assess aspiration risk before advancing diet.
Usage notes
Synonymous with modified barium swallow study in most hospitals. Radiation exposure is kept low, and the test can trial compensatory strategies such as chin tuck. Bedside swallow screens miss silent aspiration, which VFSS can detect.
