VCS stands for Version control system, a programming abbreviation.
Software that records changes to files over time so developers can review history, revert mistakes, work on parallel branches and merge contributions. Git is by far the most widely used VCS; others include Subversion and Mercurial.
Example: Never email source files around; commit everything to the VCS with a clear message.
Usage notes
Early systems such as SCCS (1972) and RCS (1982) tracked single files; CVS and Subversion added central servers, and distributed systems such as Git and Mercurial, both from 2005, give every developer a full copy of the history. Also called source control or revision control. Platforms such as GitHub and GitLab add collaboration features on top.
