UVJ stands for Ureterovesical junction, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Point where the ureter enters the bladder wall; it is the narrowest part of the ureter and the most common place for kidney stones to lodge. The junction also forms a flap-valve mechanism that normally prevents reflux of urine back toward the kidney.

Example: CT: 4 mm stone at the left UVJ with mild hydronephrosis; trial of passage with tamsulosin.

Usage notes

Stones of 5 mm or less usually pass spontaneously. Stones at the UVJ often cause urgency and frequency that mimic infection. Failure of the valve mechanism at the UVJ underlies primary vesicoureteral reflux in children.
