USVI stands for United States Virgin Islands, a US territory and military mail abbreviation.
Common written form for the US Virgin Islands in travel writing, news and local business names, used to distinguish the American islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix from the neighboring British Virgin Islands (BVI). US citizens need no passport to visit.
Example: No passport is needed for US citizens flying to the USVI, but bring one for a day trip to the BVI.
Usage notes
In postal addresses the code is VI, not USVI. The islands were the Danish West Indies until March 31, 1917, a date still marked as Transfer Day. The US dollar is the currency, and about 87,000 people lived there in the 2020 census.
