USAF stands for United States Air Force, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
Air and space warfare branch of the US armed forces, operating fighters, bombers, tankers, airlifters, intercontinental ballistic missiles and much of the nation's military space and cyber capability until the Space Force took over most space missions.
Example: The USAF grounded the fleet for inspections after a landing-gear failure.
Usage notes
The Air Force became an independent service on September 18, 1947, under the National Security Act, having grown out of the Army Air Forces of World War II. It shares the Department of the Air Force with the Space Force. Reserve components are the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.
