USCG stands for United States Coast Guard, a military unit and organization abbreviation.

Maritime law enforcement, search-and-rescue and military service of the United States. In peacetime it operates under the Department of Homeland Security, and it can be transferred to the Navy in wartime or by presidential direction.

Example: The USCG rescued four people from a sinking sailboat 40 miles off Cape Hatteras.

Usage notes

The service traces its origins to the Revenue Cutter Service created on August 4, 1790, at the urging of Alexander Hamilton; it took the name Coast Guard in 1915 when merged with the Life-Saving Service. It moved from the Transportation Department to Homeland Security in 2003. Cutters carry the prefix USCGC.
