URS stands for Ureteroscopy, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Endoscopic procedure in which a small scope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter and kidney to find and treat stones, usually by laser lithotripsy and basket extraction. It is also used to biopsy upper tract tumors.
Example: Right distal ureteral stone; URS with holmium laser lithotripsy and 6 Fr stent placed.
Usage notes
Flexible ureteroscopes can reach almost all of the kidney's calyces. A temporary ureteral stent is often left afterward and can cause discomfort and urgency until removed. Thulium fiber lasers are newer alternatives to holmium. Stone-free rates for ureteral stones exceed those of shock wave lithotripsy.
