UNREP stands for Underway replenishment, a military term abbreviation.
Transfer of fuel, ammunition, food and supplies between ships while both are moving at sea, letting naval forces stay deployed without returning to port. Ships typically steam side by side about 150 to 200 feet apart.
Example: The destroyer came alongside the oiler for an UNREP in heavy swells.
Usage notes
UNREP includes connected replenishment (CONREP), using hoses and wire rigs between ships, and vertical replenishment (VERTREP), using helicopters. The US Navy developed modern UNREP techniques in World War II. NATO and the Royal Navy often say replenishment at sea (RAS).
