UCMJ stands for Uniform Code of Military Justice, a military term abbreviation.
Federal criminal code that applies to members of the US armed forces, establishing military offenses, courts-martial, nonjudicial punishment and appeals. It applies worldwide and covers crimes such as desertion, insubordination and conduct unbecoming an officer alongside ordinary offenses.
Example: The sergeant faces charges under the UCMJ for assault and dereliction of duty.
Usage notes
Congress enacted the UCMJ in 1950, replacing the separate Articles of War and naval regulations, and it took effect in 1951. Its punitive articles run from Article 77 to Article 134, the catch-all "general article." Recent reforms created independent special trial counsel offices to prosecute serious crimes such as sexual assault and murder.
