UNGA stands for United Nations General Assembly, an international organization abbreviation.
Main deliberative body of the United Nations, in which all 193 member states have one vote each. It debates global issues, approves the UN budget, elects non-permanent Security Council members and adopts resolutions that are generally not legally binding.
Example: World leaders arrived in New York for the UNGA high-level week.
Usage notes
Each regular session opens in September, when heads of state deliver speeches during "high-level week". Important questions, such as budget matters and admitting new members, need a two-thirds majority. Its resolutions, though nonbinding, carry political weight and can create international norms, such as the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
