UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, an environmental abbreviation also used in organizations.

International treaty adopted in 1992 and in force since 1994 that provides the framework for global climate negotiations, with the goal of preventing "dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system." Its nearly universal membership meets annually at the COP, and the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement were negotiated under it.

Example: Countries submit their greenhouse gas inventories to the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn.

Usage notes

The convention was opened for signature at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It divided countries into Annex I (industrialized) and non-Annex I groups, a distinction that shaped decades of debate over who should cut emissions. The secretariat is based in Bonn, Germany.
