UNCITRAL stands for United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, a litigation abbreviation.
UN body established in 1966 that drafts model laws and rules to harmonize international trade law. Its Arbitration Rules (1976, revised in 2010 and 2013) are widely used in ad hoc and investor-state arbitration, and its 1985 Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration has been adopted by dozens of countries.
Example: The investment treaty allows the investor to choose ad hoc arbitration under the UNCITRAL Rules.
Usage notes
Pronounced "un-SIT-ral". Because the UNCITRAL Rules are not tied to an institution, parties often designate an appointing authority such as the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Its other instruments include the Model Law on Electronic Commerce and the Singapore Convention on Mediation (2019).
