Highest confidentiality designation under a litigation protective order, limiting access to outside counsel and sometimes experts, while barring the opposing party's business people. It is used for trade secrets, pricing, source code and other competitively sensitive material.
Example: The supplier's cost data was produced AEO, so our client cannot see it.
Courts allow AEO designations only for genuinely sensitive information, and over-designation can draw challenges and sanctions. Whether in-house lawyers may see AEO material often turns on whether they take part in competitive decision-making, a test from U.S. Steel Corp. v. United States (Fed. Cir. 1984).
2. Authorized Economic Operator

Status granted by customs authorities to businesses that meet security and compliance standards, giving them faster clearance, fewer inspections and simplified procedures.
Example: As an AEO, our shipments into the EU are rarely inspected.
Based on the World Customs Organization's SAFE Framework of 2005, AEO programs exist in the EU and many other countries, with mutual recognition agreements linking them to programs such as the US CTPAT.
