UGI stands for Upper gastrointestinal series, a gastroenterology abbreviation.

Fluoroscopic X-ray study in which the patient swallows barium or water-soluble contrast so the esophagus, stomach and duodenum can be imaged. It shows hiatal hernias, strictures, malrotation in children, leaks after surgery and motility problems.

Example: UGI shows normal duodenal sweep and ligament of Treitz position, no malrotation.

Usage notes

Endoscopy has replaced UGI for most adult indications, but it remains essential for suspected malrotation in vomiting infants and for checking anastomotic leaks after bariatric surgery. A study limited to swallowing is called a barium swallow or esophagram. When the contrast is followed into the small intestine it becomes an SBFT.
