TPTB stands for The powers that be, a fandom and fan fiction abbreviation.
Fandom term for the people who control a show, film or franchise, such as writers, producers, networks and studios, especially when they make unpopular decisions.
Example: TPTB canceled the show on a cliffhanger, again.
Usage notes
Common in TV fandoms since the early internet, particularly on forums and LiveJournal. Often used critically when a beloved character is killed or a show is axed. The phrase predates fandom, having long meant authorities in general.
