TIN stands for Taxpayer identification number, a tax abbreviation.
General US term for any number the IRS uses to identify a taxpayer, including Social Security numbers, Employer Identification Numbers, Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers and Preparer Tax Identification Numbers. Forms such as the W-9 ask for a TIN without specifying which type.
Example: Enter the payee's TIN, either an SSN or EIN, in the box on the left.
Usage notes
Outside the US, TIN is the generic label for national tax IDs used in international reporting: the UK uses the UTR and National Insurance number, Australia the TFN and India the PAN. The adoption taxpayer identification number (ATIN) is a rarely seen fifth US type.
