TFN stands for Tax file number, a tax abbreviation.

Number of up to nine digits issued by the Australian Taxation Office to individuals and organizations for tax and superannuation. Employers and banks ask for it, and those who don't provide one have tax withheld at the top rate.

Example: Give your new employer your TFN declaration so you're not taxed at 47%.

Usage notes

Introduced in 1988. Quoting a TFN is not compulsory, but withholding without one is set at the highest marginal rate plus the Medicare levy. Because it is a target for identity theft, the ATO advises sharing it only when required.
